In the Never Ending Search for Backhauls and Wildfeeds there is the need for a new style of MPEG2/DVB Receiver. This new style of receiver uses a 4:2:2 format. The other version of mpeg2/dvb receivers use a 4:2:0 format. Some Networks are using the 4:2:2 format because it provides a higher quality signal for their affiliates to rebroadcast.

FOX/Fox Sports Net/FX and NBC/TNT/CNNSI are using mpeg2/dvb 4:2:2 format for the NASCAR Backhauls.

NBC is using the Tandberg Alteia receiver on 8psk modulation, at bit rates up to 45msps. Fox uses 4:2:2 on qpsk, but uses a very high symbol rate because they send their signal in 720 X 480 widescreen format, CBC uses 4:2:2 on 8psk and WB uses 4:2:2 on qpsk. In the case of other services, the tradeoff in picture quality may not be worth the cost of extra bandwidth necessary to transmit the 4:2:2 signal. Movie services delivered to cable head end systems would be the next logical candidates, but most of them already use GI's (Motorola) DCII encryption. CBS also uses a 4:2:2 version of DCII as well.

NASCAR Backhaul Receiver Search!

7/16/01 - Alot of us are searching for a source for a receiver that will let us pick up the NASCAR Backhauls again.

We need a receiver that can receive mpeg2/dvb 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 formats in both 8PSK and QPSK modulation modes. It also needs to support AC-3 Audio (In case the NASCAR Backhauls switch over to AC-3 plus there is other 4:2:2 programming that is already using AC-3).

The ideal receiver would also feature Auto Symbol Rate Search as well as Auto PAL/NTSC conversion.

I have not found what I want yet, at least at a reasonable price!

FYI, I just was contacted by a Bob Donnelly at Wegener (email: bdonnelly@wegener.com), and he confimed the price of a Unity 5000 is between $7k-8k.

However, he mentioned they have a Unity 500 for less than $1200, it does QPSK (only), 4:2:2 (only), and no HDTV decoder. the Integra 910S is definitly the better receiver in it's class at $880 (so far as I can find, and I've been looking hard).

There is also a computer PC card that can decode 4:2:2 format mpeg2. It is being produce by Stradis. This card does work, but would require a computer program to be written to act as a receiver before the signal can be sent to the decoder. I have not figured this one out yet.

3/23/01 - TANDBERG Television to Provide Digital Network Distribution Solution to NBC
Orlando, Florida, February 20, 2001

TANDBERG evolution 5000 digital encoding and IP data systems to replace
current analog system for distribution of programming to network affiliates

TANDBERG Television, a leading supplier of open solutions for digital
broadcasting, today announced that NBC will migrate from its current analog
distribution system to multiple TANDBERG Television digital encoding systems

3/28/01- There are a couple of companies that have come out with 8PSK decoder chips. 4:2:2 decoders are also available. These integrated solutions should make it possible to make a reasonably priced consumer model. Same way current receivers are built. 7/5/01 - Satellite Race Fans were once again disapointed after searching the sky for a Commercial free feed of the Winston Cup and the Busch Grand National races. There were no feeds to be found -- Unless you happened to be equipped with the latest Technology available known as an MPEG2/dvb 4:2:2 satellite receiver. But even with this receiver the feeds are still very tough to locate.

As technology continues to change, all the major networks are gradually evolving to Digital transmissions. The Backhauls are still there, they are just using a different method of signal delivery. The most reliable receivers that can read these type of MPEG2/dvb 4:2:2 commercial format signals are currently selling for around $5400.00 US dollars. Many research groups and developers are working at building a consumer end receiver that can process these signals, but it all takes time. There is even more bad news, as I expect ESPN to start evolving to more of the digital backhauls as there new receivers are put into operation. (Rick Caylor - GOFASTMOTORSPORTS)

7/15/01 - NBC/TNT/CNNSI are using mpeg2/dvb 4:2:2 commercial format! THIS A CONFIRMED FACT! I listened to it for Sundays Race from Chicagoland Speedway! A normal 4:2:0 receiver will receive and lock the signal but the video breaks up and the audio blinks. On the Zinwell 9111 receiver you can change the Video PIDs, this does not bring in the video, but stops the blinking in the Audio. The Audio is now uninterrupted. It is the Backhaul! This also works on the DMT-1000 and the Nokia 9600. (Rick Caylor - GOFASTMOTORSPORTS)

There are several folks on this forum who can give you better information than I can, since they actually own some of this equipment, but I've researched the issue for the past year, and here is my take (remember that I don't actually OWN one of these things - I just lust after one). There are several 4:2:2 receivers out there for the commercial market. The Tandberg Alteia appears to be a favorite of many broadcasters, and 26FOOTDISH has one in his system (which is basically a mini broadcast studio!). In its basic 4:2:2 QPSK-only version, it's about $3500. The Wegener Unity series is another favorite; I have no idea about its price. The Motorola DSR 4800 will pick up both FTA DCII stuff (e.g., CBS affiliate feeds) and will also do MPEG 4:2:2 as long as the data rate isn't too high (it won't get Fox for this reason, but does get the NBC affiliate feeds on GE7). Rod Hewitt has one of these. Tiernan Communications sells a 4:2:2 receiver that was sold by Lionel Remigo through his web site (don't have the address handy) that I think was $3000 - about the cheapest around for this kind of equipment. And Standard Communications also has or will have a 4:2:2 receiver. Don't know the details on it.

If you are going to go the commercial route, probably the most sensible thing to do is get the Tandberg Alteia with the 8PSK option, which pretty much "future proofs" you for FTA MPEG feeds like NBC and CBC (although it will not get FTA DCII feeds - e.g., CBS). This receiver runs about $5500. But be prepared to shell out another several hundred for a commercial-grade low-drift LNB in order to lock 8PSK signals.

Also, understand that all commercial receivers are a pain in the butt to operate without computer-control software, most of which is custom-written and therefore expensive and/or not readily available. The Tandberg will at least store 20 favorite channels, but don't expect anything even approaching user-friendly in the interface for these things. They were meant for broadcast engineers, not John Q. Public.

And finally, remember that at any moment the backhauls for the NASCAR feeds could be encrypted, rendering your $5000 investment into an expensive paperweight - again, though, you can probably protect yourself somewhat by going with a popular commercial choice (e.g., the Tandberg, Wegener, or Motorola) that you could resell to a broadcast station.
